Saturday I slept in till like 4pm. Then played dressups with Hyper who had some official army dinner to go to, but the official rented army dressup kit hadn't arrived, so he had to find alternative formalwear. Managed to find a suitable shirt and tie to go with his suit jacket and pants, although it wasn't as tux-like as he would have liked, and my charcoal waistcoat didn't go with. And then later Sat night The Organometallicist was wearing a proper tuxedo shirt (as alternativewear rather than formalwear). They're quite different, maybe I'll have to look for one via op-shops...

Hm. Am torn - there's some funny social shenanigans going on in Hyper's life, but I feel like it would be a bit presumptious of me to report it.

Then went and saw Kill Bill 2 with Fleur and Neiman - loved Darryl. No one else seemed to get Bladerunner flashbacks though (someone even tried to dispute the fact that she was *in* Bladerunner!). And after that, took Loud to a birthday party down south (in her old suburb actually). Drank too much, met a couple of new people, forgot to bring anything for the birthday boy, felt bad, even though he specifically wrote on invite not to bring anything, had a bit of a smoke (my first this year - bad Xena!), and a bit of a living room boogie. Was good.

Whoa - forgot my phone for the first time EVAH! Am feeling a little antsy!

Weekend went way too quick. I had a big Friday night which usually helps make the weekend seem longer, but that didn't work this time.

Met Haclev for dinner in town. Wandered Chinatown, and eventually managed to decide on a restaurant. Ordered and ate way too much.

Afterward, I wanted to check out "Hard Kandy", a notorious candy-raver night at a nearby club. I'm quite partial to a bit of old skool rave music and rave dancing, and I've been meaning to check this night out since I moved here. It turned out that Friday night was its last night ever - well, the last night at "Billboards", the original venue, anyway (in a couple of weeks, it starts up again at a new space around the corner). Anyway, I was quite keen to check it out before it all changed. Since it was the last night and we weren't members, we decided to go quite early, but after dinner (about 10:30pm) we wandered past, and it wasn't open yet. We popped into Misty for a couple of drinks, then went back at 11:30. The place was already filling up, and people were already starting to dance, which I liked, since at most clubs it often takes a while before people actually breach the dance floor.

Some *very* good dancers (many more than you'd normally see collected in one club), although the standard "Melbourne shuffle" was a bit ubiquitous. The music was fun, the crowd density reasonable, and we stayed till about 4:30. Decided to go for a chill, and went looking for a pub - the first one we went to was totally empty and appeared to be about to close, so we ended up at the Pony, which was still packed. We got a beer, and then Nora (one of Loud's friends) appeared with a passel of exceedingly trashed friends, so we stuck around a little longer than planned (they also played some enjoyable Strokesian rock). About 5:30 Haclev and I split for home, but instead of home I accidentally went back to Hard Kandy for a bit more of a dance. Was good.

Dammit - forgot my lunch again today.

I got on the train this morning and opened my book (The Blank Slate by Steven Pinker).

A little while later, the guy sitting an empty seat away over to my right bends over in my direction and pointing at a spot on the top of his cranium asks me,
"Can you see anything there?"
His dark hair was cropped very closely, so I could see his scalp. The area he was pointing at didn't seem to differ from anywhere else on his head.
"No, there's nothing there" I say.
"There's no bruise or scratch or anything? Are you sure?"
I feel obliged to examine it a bit further.
"Um, yeah, really, there's nothing there."
He sits back and seems to ignore me again.

After that I kind of watch him from the corner of my eye. He's quite skinny with long narrow features, and seems about my age. He's wearing Melbourneishly modified camo pants, a tshirt, black leather gloves, and *masses* of thin multicoloured bands and a few wider studded straps on both wrists (they go halfway up to his elbows). He's reading a small thin book, with a somewhat ragged cover of worn black cloth.

Abruptly (but not aggressively) he asks me, "What's this word here?", pointing to a word in an entry in his book.
"It says 'pentacle'", I say, wondering if, within the confined space and with the materials at hand, I could deflect the side-effects from an inexpertly cast hex.
"Sorry, I'm dyslexic, and I have trouble with some of this", he says.

I have enough time to realize he seems to be reading a rather skinny English dictionary, which I begin to think is reasonable and possibly self-improving, and that he's up to the letter 'P', before he says,
"Do you study a lot? I'm trying to give up smoking. But I just had one back there", he points past the back of the carriage.

I suppose he means before he got on the train. He continues, "I don't do any sport, but I go running every day - I went for a jog this morning, actually". Before I can decide if I should say anything, and if so, what response might be called for, he asks, "What's this word here?"
"It says 'plane'", I reply.

It's part of the same entry as 'pentacle', and they both seem to be part of the definition of 'pentagram', but I find it hard to focus on reading the entire entry as I'm also trying to watch him out the corner of my eye, and he's also now asking me "What are you reading? Is it any good?"
I try to give a coherent one sentence on Pinkers discussion of the mind thus far, and he says "That sounds really interesting", before putting his book down next to him, carefully taking his gloves off, standing up, stuffing them into a back pocket and going over to the window on the other side of the carriage and staring out for a moment, and then slamming the window open. Then he walks to the other end of the carriage and opens the door to the between-carriage area. As we near my stop, he closes the door and starts to walk back toward my end. I and all the other people headed for uni exit the train. He stands at the open door and stares into the distance, but unfortunately doesn't get out.

Almost every day, a 27 year old female with a different name (the latest is Helen) asks me to add her to my ICQ list. They all seem to live in a city called t4v0l, but there is no other data in the profile. I'm almost curious enough to add them.

I smell jalapenos.

Last night had a lovely chat to K. Must get one of those cheap UK phonecard thingos. Could actually get around to calling the big sis too! And other phone thing at moment is I thought I'd been *so* restrained over the past month with the mobbly, but I've still spent $25 :P i may as well be on a plan with some kind of posh phone...

V cool loot included 3 books (war, politics, hoaxes), one of those beautifully radially symmetric succulents, Glenfiddich chocolate, weird german cognac and walnut liqueur in spesh glass flask/bottle, weird chocolate licorice salami, quite melbourney detailed tshirt, neon rocket luggage tag, and very very (very) extravagant cufflinks! Seriously overly extravagant. Am a bit too worried to try and find out how much they might've cost. Wonder when I'll actually get to wear them? Someone else needs to get married please.

I actually took Friday off to cook for birthday dinner party Friday night. The cooking was a bit stressful, mainly because I had no idea about the volumes I needed to be thinking about and the dread of undercatering (the horror!). Even got a little irritated at the housemates. Hyper and Knutter left dishes (I felt like) I had to do to get more benchspace when I felt quite pressed for time, and Loud with additional menu ideas which didn't quite mesh with mine, and then leaving some of her cooking for me to do! But managed to be over that by evening when they all reappeared after their various days out.

The dud dish was the curried apple soup (had a really good one at Windows Restaurant at Burswood a few years ago), the recipe I tried was way too curried and much too salty and not nearly apple-ish enough, luckily it was the first thing I made on Friday, and I felt much better after I decided it was unacceptable and threw it out. Replaced it with the tomato and garlic stew with prawns that Loud and I tried a few weeks ago, and was good and simple and quick. For starters I made a massive (quadruple) lot of hummous, plus falafel (yes, boxed, not from scratch!) with tzatziki. Made an excellent vegetarian moussaka (made before with favourable reports). A spinach and ricotta pasta bake (a bit bland, won't try it again). Caramelized onion, mushroom and goat's cheese tarts. Also a chickpea curry, a pumpkin curry, and a huge load of basmati in my new rice cooker (splurged as present to myself). And finally for the carnivores, a lamb roast (2.6kg leg!) - turned out pretty well for my first roast, may try it again, was v easy. For dessert I made chocolate brownies, and Loud made a banana cake, and I also had a selection of cheese and fruit and crackers. We didn't even make it to the curries or the fruit and cheese!

Ended up with plenty of leftovers (although now practically all gone!). Had the expected quarter of no shows, so 30 people, which was a pretty good density for the living room plus kitchen area. People seemed happy enough standing around the kitchen and talking and eating, even when there was a bit of seating available in the living room.

The stew and moussaka were most commented upon, but the lamb got devoured pretty thoroughly too, and the brownies were also quite popular. Was very relieved it all turned out okay volume and edibility-wise. Plus I got four marriage proposals (although one was from Loud which according to Hyper doesn't count).

I love Kenneth!
Why is Howard so loyal to US businesses?
"Originally, most of the gains from the free trade agreement were supposed to come from opening up agricultural trade."
...But now that agriculture has been totally UNfreed in the FTA:
"The main gain claimed now by the Centre for International Economics/Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade is $4 billion a year from abolishing the requirement of Foreign Investment Review Board approval for US equity investment in non-sensitive industries - which was apparently overlooked when the CIE did its original study.

Applied to all countries, this suggests the benefits of scrapping the FIRB would be in excess of $15 billion a year.

As Garnaut commented: "If these were credible numbers, I would press both Opposition and Government party rooms on the absolute urgency of implementing these reforms. They are in no way tied to the free trade agreement: they are much better implemented on a most-favoured-nation basis."

Ooh! This is me! A whole TERABYTE! Wheeeee!

OK, if you can't be bothered clicking on link ("clinking"?):
"Several users of the search engine's Gmail Web-based e-mail service noticed Tuesday that their storage limits had quietly been raised to 1 million megabytes, or 1 terabyte. That's four times the typical capacity of a new high-end PC's hard drive."

Help! I'm trapped and I can't get out!

Okay - never really finished off the trip out west.

Day 5
Got packed up and then had yum-cha with Dad in the city. Managed to not overeat. It was gloriously sunny and warming up nicely - as it had the rest of the weekend. Dad dropped me off at Lauren and BJ's (again!), and on spur of the moment, we decided to go to the beach! It was so so good. Beach not over-warm, water on the right side of too-cold. In for a brief swim, a quick lay in the sun and dry, a stroll for ice cream, then back to theirs. Daria came by, and then Fleur. There's news, quite big news. Fleur and Neiman got engaged the night before the wedding! At that point it was a semi-secret (but now it's mostly not, although there are still a couple of people who don't know! e.g. their housemate Quill who they have been having problems with, even though their other housemate - his girlfriend - knows!), as Fleur wanted to wait till she had a ring, and Neiman had wanted her to have some input into choosing it.

Only got to hang out a bit before Mum came to pick me up for afternoon tea. We went for waffles and icecream, then she was giving me a lift to the airport.

Serendipitously, Fleur and Neiman and I were all on the same flight. Fleur was getting a lift in with her Mum too, but I was nearer Neiman, so Mum and I picked him up from Leila's on the way. Had a sad goodbye to Leila and Tanton, and Driz and Kassie (over from the Arctic for the wedding and staying at Leila's). Then to the airport. Met up with Fleur and her mum, and we went for a beer outside the gates. On the plane, they don't have champagne, but the lovely FA provides us with a round of free G&T's upon learning of the engagement. We don't get much reading or movie watching done on the flight, but talk lots and lots about It instead - invite lists are made, etc. I try to buy two more rounds of G&T's, but the FA's keep waving my money away and giving us free rounds. The little Gordon's Gin bottles are more like two drinks I think. We get a little trashed (at least, Fleur and I do, as Neiman is driving us home from the airport). Is a very good and fun flight home.

Last night I went to a birthday dinner for Cal. Cal is also from out west, but moved several years ago for his undergrad degree. He's tall and skinny, and I get the impression that he should be English, and constantly wear natty pin-striped suits and carry an old-fashioned black umbrella - am still trying to decide if a bowler hat is there or not. He's in a stereotypically boring financial services area, but he's a bit of a comedian. He even does impersonations occasionally, but generally he's not an over-the-top try-too-hard type funny-guy, he's mostly quite restrained and dry with a very good sense of humour, a quick wit, and good timing. I managed to find an interesting book on philosophical paradoxes for him, which for some reason seemed like exactly his cup of tea, but I can't work out why (i.e. I can't recall any particular incident or conversation which made me think this). He did *say* it was exactly the type of thing he liked last night - but I hate that, he's obliged to say it, and I really want to believe it, which seems to lack balance.

Friday night I was going to meet up with Haclev for drinks for the birthday of a friend of his. It was at a bar just down the road from me, so I invited him to have dinner at mine first. Loud was also home for dinner, and Knutter was having a couple of her friends around for dinner too. So had a fair bit of food and good conversation and average-to-dodgy wine. I think Loud and Haclev got along quite well. Knutter has some very pretty friends, but they tend to be a little standoffish (which may be related).

Then Loud came with us to the bar on Greville St, and we had a few more drinks and met some of Haclev's friends, and had a little dance, but Loud and I ended up way too trashed, and went home about 1? 2?...

*blah* SO have to cut back on the drinking. Really meant to be restrained last night, even thought about going to bed early. But instead went to going-away drinks for one of Loud's friends at a Melbish bar (under Ellen's new studio!) - dim, reds, a bit cramped. We were both intending to take it easy and catch the last train home at midnight, but then it was midnight and we were still busy talking and drinking.

Met a couple of cool characters. Fred has just finished a creative writing MA, and I got him talking about literature and then got Loud to join in, and was all v cultural and artsy and funny. His primary recommendations: Hemingway's Farewall to arms, Dostoevsky's Crime and Punishment (yeah, guess I'll give it another go). We also discussed Loud's lack of patience with white male post-colonial authors - heh. Mike was a poor student doing a design (I think) degree, as he had been for the last 7 years. We discussed our disinterest with the whole Melb AFL obsession and our ambivalence about choosing and supporting a team for solely geographic reasons. He also lives just around the corner from us so we discussed pubs and neighbourhood stuff.

Got way too trashed. Was v bad.

Got in to work late today. Have to finish project. Please project, just finish yourself. Have to leave for dinner in a couple of hours.

Scary
Have just invited way too many people (40) over for dinner next Friday. Really should've built up from just a few people before this. What if I just can't cook enough? What if I have so many things going they all turn out crap? What if people have nowhere to sit? What if I just get a caterer in?

Interesting - a zipped M*thcad file is larger than the unzipped form...

Cool Cats
Went to the Night Cat last night and saw Cat Empire. Many people have talked them up to me for a few months now - possibly since I moved here. Doors supposedly opened at 8pm. I didn't get there till a quarter past - the queue was MASSIVE. Down the block and around the corner and about 4-5 people deep. My friends Xena and Nathan had arrived at 7:30, and I spotted them about halfway down the queue. (I also saw Cec, my main contact at the organisation to whom I owe a report on this last project! Had a short chat to her - we get along quite well I think - like socially, outside of work - but I really have to get this report and the associated-guilt done and out of the way). Think we finally managed to actually get inside after maybe half an hour (possibly more).

It got more and more packed until they finally came on. Was happy to again spot a bass, plus they also had a trumpet (which seemed to get passed between a couple of people), a sax, a couple of vocalists, a couple of percussionists, and there must have been a dj/mixer/electronic guy sitting down whom I couldn't see (even though we were only like 3-4m back from the stage?), hm, think I also spotted a tambourine :) They were v cool and energetic, and I somehow recognised a couple of their songs despite hardly listening to the radio over the past year. Jazzy with a hip-hop flavour and a reasonably wide streak of ska. Liked the brass action.

Spim-spam
Opened a new freemail account a couple of days ago, but then they had a bit of trouble and I couldn't access it. I logged in for the first time today, and in addition to the "Welcome to this freemail account" email, I had 4 spams! And I haven't even used the bloody account yet! Sheesh.

Féte de la Victoire
Got up late. Had a huge breakfast. Went to lunch with Hyper and new girl Mel. Had a good talk - as usual about Hyper's whole economics/free-market obsession. Then went and had a browse at Borders.

Home to help Loud with a pre-dinner-party grocery shop. Went to la supermarché for fetta and arborio, et al., and then to the markets for marinated olives and bread and veggies and seafood. Home, and Maneater and Kooky arrive (have referred to Kooky before, can't recall what I blognymmed her, she's kooky and very funny). We make them both sous chefs and put them to work chopping veggies and scrubbing mussels while Loud and I start preparing hummous, salad, tomato and garlic stew with prawns, and mussels on a bed of leek and rosemary risotto. We were a smoothly oiled machine and made it to a perfectly prepped stage just leaving the prawns and mussels to be cooked as required. Sat down for drinks and nibbles.

Funky and Danno arrived and settled in, then Metro arrived with a full box of wine! He's currently working at a wine cellar, and gets to take home leftovers from tastings, etc. We totally scored, and will deffo be having him back. Muso also came (Loud is happily mostly over him now!). Threw the prawns in the stew for a few minutes and had with lovely fresh ciabatta. Despite using the lightest pot we had, the double lot of risotto had kept cooking in it's own heat, a bit past al dente (might time it a bit finer next time). Quickly steamed the mussels in butter and sauvignon blanc, arranged them on a scoop of risotto, and garnished. Then just fruit and cheese and crackers for dessert. Dishes all worked quite nicely, and were all pretty simple to cook. Drank way too much. Was fun. Must do it again soon.

Ooh - fresh new blogger setup. Zesty!
Had fabbo weeekend.

50th Anniversary of the Battle of Dien Bien Phu
After work on Friday I went and got my first carton (Tooheys Old!) for a couple of weeks after a short attempted detox after the West/Wedding/Weekend (where I drank for 8 days straight). Then I rang Neiman to see what he and Fleur were up to that night. Turns out they were heading to a hip-hop gig a foaf was playing in.

I made it to F&N's house about 7ish and Neiman played me a stack of Aussie hip-hop which I often find jarring cos of the accents, and which I just generally don't listen to. He played me some really ill stuff (e.g. Hilltop Hoods, MattyB, Downsyde, Syllabollix...) and also threw around a bit of hip-hop lingo, much of which was a little more confronting and which I doubt I'll work into everyday conversation. Was interesting what a diff mode of listening it was for me to be really concentrating on the lyrics and rhythm and wordage rather than the melody or harmony or breaks or backbeat or multiple layering. Suspect would not have cared for most of the tracks if it was just background music. Was quite impressed with the track rhyming oesophagus with phosphorus.

Fleur got home from work, and we all headed out to Revolver. Had a couple of beers, then the support act, Velure came on. This was somewhat serendipitous, as Fleur really likes them, but we hadn't realized they were playing. I hadn't heard them before. They were good. Live (guitars and bass and things), electronic, beautiful vocals, more trip-hop than hip-hop.

The guys we came to see, True Live ([*disappointment*]: no good links), were fantastic. Suspected I might like them before they'd played a note when the double bass appeared (am a slut for the double bass). They also had an electronic cello - it looked like the outer edges of a cello (you could see through the middle). Plus a violinist (who was fine but annoyed me a little by being all dramatic and in the spotlight just because he can actually carry his instrument when the double bass was *so* the star). Then a dj/mixer/electronics guy, two percussionists (traditional plus bongos?tribal?), and of course the (I mean 'da') MC. Impressed. Bought their cd. Listening to it now.

Hm, the Beer Festival is kind of expensive. Might just go drinking instead.

Day 4 continued...
The upper floor of the yacht club was rather posh - fantastic view of the river (possibly spoiled by all the bloody yachts - but I guess that's a bit subjective), and surrounded by some unnaturally green lawns with a few nicely leafy mature eucalypts, and so much sunlight and blue sky. Weather continued to warm. Was getting rather hot actually. We got stuck into the beers while waiting for bridal party to cruise slowly down the river and then slowly make their way from the river up to the yacht club, apparently stopping every 10 m for more photos :) Meanwhile we were all waiting on the balcony with cold drinks in one hand and rosepetals getting wilted and sweaty in the other. DJ played a stack of Sasha and Digweed et al., - he was sooo much better than the guy who took over after lunch and insisted on playing typical cheesy 80s pop reception music.

Canapes, drinks, lunch (buffet - worked quite well, lots of salads, fish, chicken, potatoes, pasta), drinks, interspersed with speeches (terribly cute one from Laetitia's 10 year old bro).

Afterward (things wound up about 4pm) there was a boat for the bridal party, and as one of the interstate/overseas visitors I was supposed to be on it, but Laelie (who'd also been MCing) was running around trying to collect people (she'd only just been given the list of people for it and had only heard about it before lunch!) and she obviously couldn't see me on there (apparently I was) and I didn't want to stress her more so I didn't say anything.

Went to Lauren and BJ's new (ish) house (okay, might be 6 months old now) instead and got shown around, and then went for dinner with them and Daria and Lauren's little bro and his girlfriend. Another person from high-school was there! Working behind the bar, we had actually been pretty good friends at school, but lost touch when I went to uni and he (hearsay:) went to the slammer for stabbing someone. Went up and had a bit of a chat and gave him my number in case he made it over here (was planning to after his course in a couple of years). Then went and finished dinner and then went for (loud!) electroclash and more drinks, before a good sleep after a rather long day.

-relieved sigh-
m*thcad apparently behaving
model working
actually have results for mini-project
can do a bit on proper project now

I guess while I'm stumped I should continue on Perth updateage. Um.

Day 3 continued...
Was ignominously dragged away from The Queens at about 7pm? while there were still lots of people I hadn't had enough of a chance to catch up with, and wanted to talk to and hang out and drink beer with. The wedding party and close friends were having dinner in Subiaco and I was apparently invited. Was quite trashed by this stage. Ate too much (quite average) seafood chowder and thai fish cakes. Somehow made it home... did someone give us a lift? did I take a taxi? I have no idea. In any case, made it home by midnightish I think, and slept...

Day 4
Got up at 8:30, got dressed (charcoal slacks, charcoal pinstripe waistcoat, very pale khaki business shirt, silk silver tie - no really, they go together! really!). Remembered to bring the prez, wrote in card, waited outside for Lauren and BJ to give me a lift. Despite predictions of showers, the sky was blue and mostly clear, and it was already starting to get warm. Finally got picked up (actually only 10 mins later than planned), and almost forgot to pick up Daria on our way to the river foreshore reserve where the ceremony was taking place.

Beautiful green lawns, healthy eucalypts, glassy expanse of river (perfect for wakeboarding, one of the foremost pasttimes of the happy couple). Was very cool to see friends all dressed up in suits/dresses/full makeup this early on a Sunday morning. A violinist and guitarist made quiet background music - including classical versions of Enter Sandman, and am pretty sure I heard some AC/DC in there too - heh. Only one person I knew who I didn't expect to see there (a DJ with pretty good taste in progressive house).

Tim was hanging out a bit, looking rather nervous and hot and bothered (the latter probably because of the three piece suit and the getting toward 30 degree weather) until Laetitia finally arrived - she looked amazing, really stunning. The bridesmaids and bride walked down the aisle we (the crowd) made, in a literal beam of sunlight which shone through the massive trees, and stood with Tim glowing (sun position not planned, Tim also looked increasingly overheated). Ceremony quite short and very sweet, they signed the register, and then the champers was broken out. Everyone had a good (drink and) mill and chat about the fabulous weather and wakeboarding possibilities and the earliness of the ceremony. Our splinter group (the cool young group except for those encumbered with responsibilities) decided to go for coffee before heading to the reception, which wasn't for more than an hour. Headed up to the Dome on the old yuppie strip which was pretty full, but we managed to score a table and hung out and caffeined up. Saw a girl from school I almost didn't recognise, carrying a baby! But didn't have a chance to say hi. Then off to the Yacht Club for further drinking and celebrating.

Bah! Stoopid M*thc*d! Why won't you do as you're told?

bah - what a waste of a weekend, spent a good 34 hours sleeping :P Seem to be mostly over it, but head a bit muzzy. Was supposed to go to a party on Sat night with Haclev, at a club I've heard good things about, and had gotten my name on the doorlist and was quite set on it :(
