Jub-jub
-sigh-
finally got this job application off - it was actually due at 2pm today (ie. 5pm on the east coast), but I didn't email it till like 5 mins past. I could have sent it actually on time :P Anyway, I just got a reply email that my application has been received, wonder if that 5 mins is going to count against me?!

Last night
Dinner with the ex-classmate was lovely. Met some of her and her partner's friends, most of whom I hadn't met before. Those I met were perhaps a little white-bread, in a rural sort of a way, although this is probably unfair considering how little we conversed. We ate Mongolian BBQ, which I haven't had for ages, and I had a healthful portion of a very cheap Sauvignon-Blanc. Surprisingly, considering there were about 20 people, the bill (no separate billing) actually worked out.

Evilocity
It's my big sister's birthday today. I haven't been organised enough to even send her a card! Evil evil evil brother :( Will have to look for a prez this weekend. Idea's? She's a little hard to buy for, being a very tasteful funky type, who's also (unfortunately) quite consumerist. She also lives in a mega-metropolis where they probably have a much larger selection of funky stuff. There's also postage to consider.

Spending
Sheesh, also need prezzes for Lauren (funky pepper-grinder maybe), for Tiho (any interesting Star Wars paraphernalia would do), little sis - hm..., and Me Mum. D'OH! Just checking diary to see if I've missed any other birthdays - It was BETSY'S birthday last month! darn.

Evulsion
Like pulling teeth - I just deleted an ENTIRE PARAGRAPH from an article I'm writing - I tried and tried, but I just couldn't save it. It was very painful - [*shiver*] and I may have to perform one more extraction.

wow - did i not blog at all yesterday? well i was going to not open blogger today also, but scary encounter of week must be recounted.

I got in lateish (quarter to ten) and the scary HoD had been trying to reach me since 9. He was out when I rang back, so of course I spent an hour stressing about what he wanted to see me about (many possibilities). He came by before 11, and it turned out he wanted stuff (some plots and data animations) from me, so he was very civil and reasonable - phew. Of course, I just spent way too much time putting the stuff he wanted together and burning it onto a CD (stupid writer was rather dodgy), considering i'm supposed to have this section to real supervisor tomorrow, PLUS job application!!! ergh.

We: 2+1.

I really felt like going to the gym about an hour ago. But now it doesn't seem very appealing.

Psycho at the top? - heh.
"Psychologists probing the wave of corporate crime in America have noticed a trend that may not surprise many workers: the boss could well be a psychopath.
[...snip...]
Psychopaths tend to be arrogant, short-tempered, manipulative, deceitful, lacking in empathy and remorse, and with a need for self-aggrandisement while apparently being "rational"."

and unrelated but also amusingly, WIRED have hacked into Saddam's email! Ha!

Think FuBoP meeting about to start in other room - maybe I should've stayed away till it was safely over? [*butterflies*] - what if they decide to ask me to clarify something in the report? [*shiver*]

But in happier news - I had fish fingers for breakfast! I haven't had fish fingers in years. They were quite good, although that may have been the loads of ketchup.

Also - thank you to all commenters. Your efforts are much appreciated.

Just had a finalish meeting with The Supervisor. God he's so relentlessly positive!

His suggested timeline! Argh! Ohmigod - is it actually realistic? He can be very convincing, and yet it seems so implausible at the same time

Also, FuBoP's being met with tomorrow morning. I'm not going, but am feeling rather unsettled about it anyway.

Re: _6 feet under_, the depressing aspect of recent episodes is the big greedy national corporation trying to buy out the local little family company, or just force them out of business - it's just too real for me! The macabreness is good. Also, I miss those ads. But okay, am a wuss anyway.

-sigh- There goes another weekend...

On Friday night I went to a going away dinner for LJ and Egg, who drove off to Decapolis on Saturday. We (The Gang) went to a Greek Restaurant in yuppie-burb, which I've been meaning to try for a while. It has a really inviting outdoor area, colourful mosaic floor, bubbling fountain, kind of modern mediterranean. The old greek proprieter came up and introduced himself and chatted with us. The food was good - I had smoked trout with capers and olives and lots of lemon on a bed of greens.

Went and hung out at Lauren's after - checked out her holiday snaps, and drank English Breakfast. Was relaxing.

Saturday, I went and saw The Grandmother - have I mentioned she's been moved into The Father's place? she's losing mobility, and sometimes gets confused :( but I think healthwise is as well as can be expected, and really isn't too bad. My roses are going gangbusters, so brought her a bunch. Aunty C is visiting from overseas for a little while and staying there too, and my local Aunty (Aunty Y) was also visiting. So had a chat and caught up with them a little, but then had to leave and head down to the beach to lounge in the sun with a trashy mag (New Scientist). Water was a bit cold but refreshing.

After the beach, I went shopping with The Housemate for 4 birthday presents, but we only managed to get 1 (for Fleur, a funky photo frame to go with an excellent photo we have of Fleur and us and Lauren and BC, all windblown in bright sunlight, sitting on a limestone wall by the ocean). Hm. And I have two Sister's and a Mother in November too. Argh.

Sat night I stayed in and went to bed early. Was deluxe.

Sunday, slept in, went to the gym, managed to get a birthday present (just a CD voucher, boring but always useful) in time to go to birthday drinks at a local pub. Also returned to the birthday boy a book I borrowed from him 4 years ago, _The quark and the jaguar_ (Murray Gell-Man), with profuse apologies plus the loan of a couple of my pop physics books (_Black holes and baby universes_ by Hawking and _Wrinkles in Time_ by George Smoot). Felt very bad, as I knew it (_TQatJ_) was one of his faves, and I knew it was just sitting on my shelf the whole time...

Anyway, drank lots. Caught up with people. Went home.

And finally, in up-to-the-minute news, I just got a call from an undergrad classmate who's back in town for a week - we're catching up on Thursday! How nice :)

d'oh! meant to go to the gym - but went to the tav instead. oops.

No 1,3,7-trimethylxanthine yesterday, but was quite restless last night anyway - am I just trying to justify allowing myself just a little (oh so sweet and delicious) hit a day?

I was sure the big meeting with the Funding Body People (FuBoP's) was originally scheduled for this morning... hmm... not much time left till my expatriate supervisor is away again...

hm. google not immediately helpful either...

Did the fitness appraisal, but opted out of the actual fitness-test-cycle-at-different-rates-measure-heartrate-deal (slacker!), as am not feeling very fit. Will (will!) rebook and do proper full on appraisal sometime soon. Maybe.

Skin folds okay as usual, but belly and sides not great, could probably work on them :(

Girths okay - happily, my calves seem to have re-symmetrized. Was somewhat irritated at appraisal a year ago that my calves measured assymetrical. Previous fitness appraisers had commented favourably on my limb girth symmetry. Should work further on ambidexterity and whatever the equivalent for footedness is... (ambipodality? pedality? um.)

still no comments!?! :(
someone? anyone?! please!?! comment me!

dammit - should've known this feedback thing was a bad idea...

Wednesday, October 23, 2002

Hm. Have a fitness appraisal booked for this arvo, but am actually feeling a little hungover. Maybe I should postpone it.

okay, it was The Housemate's quiz night last night (she's Treasurer for a Faculty Society Club Thingo) - it was a bit last minute and disorganized, but they did very well, had a good turnout, etc. one complaint however, THEY DIDN'T HAVE A BOOBY PRIZE! that was SO *ours*!

Also. Drank too much. Ick.

looks like my commenting just needed a night's rest to sort itself out. don't you love that? so someone - lay a comment on me!

hm. comments not working properly in IE (need to press 'OK' button to view previous comments), but is fine in Netscape? bah.

nb. yes CallaS, I did fiddle a little to fix the Netscape horizontal display problem. Haven't managed to fix totally (depending on browser width), but is partway there. Apologies if you wanted an argument over this ("this" being people who don't bother to make sure their pages display nicely in other browsers), but I totally agree with you... Well, okay, not "if", as I know you did want a spat, but we may have to try and pick another topic. Have I told you I'm pining for The One? Where oh where are they? :-)

(-ah- what would i do without google? can't wait till i can get a chip in my head, letting me google whenever i want...)
Apparently caffeine (1,3,7-trimethylxanthine) can affect you for up to 20 hours! sheesh. Had previously read more on the order of 8-10 hours, spose I'll give up again.

Had trouble getting to sleep last night. Could've been due to having TWO cups of caffeinated-evil yesterday - even though they were both before lunch! But had vigorous session at the gym, which I thought would've taken care of any residue :(

nb - also drank more than 3 litres of water yesterday! Discounting dancing-all-night-occasions, this must be a record!

Hm - make that 17 - if you count finding Waldo (!) as "reading"...

Darn, have only read 16 of The 100 Most Frequently Banned Books of 1990–2000. A few of the rest are on my vaguely formless "To Read" list... wonder if I should bump them up to a higher priority?

Stayed here (at work) way too late last night (well, only 8, but wanted to leave at 6), but arrived at Machiato's going-away in time for a manicure. Apparently, the creepy Nutrimetics lady has a blog too! And it's scary - but no one would tell me where it was before the event - will have to find out today.

Ate lots of dips and chocolate fondue and yummy bread. Then soaked hands (two kinds of seaweed and irish moss), exfoliated (blue gritty bits, didn't look like 'beads' to me), and massaged with two different (oily) rub things (one may have had apricot). Despite promises, hands not feeling noticeably different this morning. Was a fun experience though. Although could've been appropriate, didn't volunteer to "Colour with Confidence" on Halloween however.

Went home and finished _Castles in the air_ (Gwyneth Jones), an enjoyably different post-not-quite-apocalyptic scenario.

didn't go hear aphrodite :(

I also didn't go to the gym all weekend, and membership ran out yesterday! when I renewed it last (a year ago), I thought I might possibly be out of here by now :-) oh well... will have to renew tonight.

should i go hear aphrodite tonight?
should i let it depend on whether la and mis are going?

winter came back here yesterday, but today it went away again.

blah - proofs mostly mostly off.
have missed start of pump. spose i'll go to circuit at 6.

fuck - how can it be 16:20 already?

    Thursday, October 17, 2002

In other planeterry news, there's something wrong with my right knee. Not the joint, just a weird kind of pressure - it feels like my circulation is out of whack - wonder if a circuit could smack it back into whack?

okay - Supervisor meeting went okay of course, he's too nice to make me feel really bad, even when I should...

-ah- Adobe Illustrator - i might even enjoy it if it weren't work stuff...

    Wednesday, October 16, 2002

    okay - blogger appears recovered:
    1. Have been invited to what is apparently a girlie-night (am only guy!) going-away party with Nutrimetic (tm) involvement. Am in a quandary - have option of opting out of smearing food on my face, et al., but feel like it may be a rare opportunity to assist in breaking of stereotypes, push my envelope, etc., fortunately there may be limited availability of such, so will relievedly leave opportunity for those who will actually enjoy. nb. have been promised pyjama pillow fights, is very exciting.

    2. Supervisor back in town by surprise. Got a couple of warnings yesterday, and when Officemate bumped into Supervisor, he made sure Supervisor was apprised of how hard I'd been working, that I was here all the time and not slacking off, and that I had been run around a lot in aid of The Report. Good boy! Good Officemate! Had a short chat with him (Supervisor) this morning, but he's expecting a longer meeting tomorrow :( blargh - what am I going to say?

    argh.
a couple of developments today, which I'd like to blog about, but something's wrong with blogger and i don't know whether it's working properly...

Hm - what's with this random indent in Netscape?

Somewhat related to the Jurassic body size question from last week (however, dino's are mostly unexplained).

me having broccoli for lunch ...mmmMMMmmm...

    from the NY Times:
"a recent poll found that broccoli is the second most hated food ... topped only by brussels sprouts...

...a new study from Johns Hopkins University shows that it possesses a compound that appears to be more effective than antibiotics against the bacteria that cause peptic ulcers. Even more impressive, tests in mice suggest that the same compound
[Ed: assume they're just talking about sulphorafane, which I'm pretty sure they've known about for a few years now!] could offer serious protection against stomach cancer, the second most common cancer in the world.

It would behoove us then to get munching. Whatever else their problems, I bet the ancient Romans were not beset with stomach ulcers. According to the 19th-century chef Alexis Soyer, the first-century gourmet Apicius, who wrote the nearest thing to a Roman cookbook that survives today, was so good at cooking broccoli that ''this dish alone would have been enough to establish his reputation.'' Tiberius's son was so crazy about Apician broccoli that the emperor was forced to tell the boy to curb his appetite. The vegetable's popularity was finally expanded about a millennium and a half later when Catherine de Medici moved from Florence to France in 1533 in order to marry the heir to the French throne. Her chefs came with her and introduced broccoli to the country. The Italians are partial to broccoli pan-fried in olive oil with capers and slivers of prosciutto or a little Parmesan cheese. The French typically take the kinder route with cream and butter in soups or purees."

Wonder if it's also got some addictive component or something - i def get cravings sometimes...

and there goes the entire day on formatting... [stupid&*^%bloody*&%$&#$$weirdass-auto*&%$#@odd-even(*&^%^section-breaks!]

should go to the gym now, but just missed start of circuit. and Monday night is crowded night in weights room. and should go return those overdue library books anyway.

*blargh*! I just agreed to help MORE with The Bloody Report! It appears it's still not stable on FLy's dinky mac laptop, but it *is* stable on mine, so *I'm* going to be making the minor changes the Physical Modeller (PM) has found...

I'm so going to use this to not look at those proof/figure changes I should be doing... How self-defeating.

    -sigh-
Had a thought a couple of weeks ago when first helping collate The Report, that I should just put it all in a nice master document myself - but I decided that was the main job of the Formatting Lady (FLy). When what she started doing was just cutting and pasting all the disparate chapters into one big document, I was a bit dubious, and had a very quick browse around Word:P to see if I could still remember anything about master documents (after a few years). However, the location of the primary "create master document" commands seemed to have changed in the latest Word version, and I decided the FLy knew what she was doing, and didn't look into it any more, trusting that "my part was done", and it was in hands of others now. Of course, mega-doc had lots of unloading-missing-figure problems which no one else was doing anything about, and after a lot of fiddling over the last few days, I finally decided to just split it all up into subdocs again and put it into a master document. Seems to have solved the problems. Fingers Crossed. Yeah - should probably have just done it in the very first place...

pppthbt! Had *another* look through The Report, as Formatting Lady said she was having problems with the one I sent. The probs she described are the same probs I had in the copy she sent me - so there! I managed to override them though, as well as find and fix a couple of other mistakes, which makes me feel somewhat productive. Although the printer's not working (as usual) and unfortunately, I also just got emailed a list of proof changes to be made to a paper about to go to print - ergh - I hate changing figures, especially a year after you last generated the figs in question - which script version did I use to make it? which data files was it using? and stoopid legends always mess things up... bah.

And should go to the gym now, but was *hoping* to make it to the circuit two hours ago, and can I be bothered lifting? Would probably be good for my frame-of-mind however.

It was supposed to be sunny today :( is looking a bit overcast though, and it's definitely not 27degsC :P

    :-P
Bal invited me to go to Godskitchen tonight - I do kind of want to see Armin van Buren, but it's like $52! Belle and Umi and others (apparently they have a group of 10 or so) are going. I haven't seen these guys since like March. And Adam Freeland is on tomorrow night (sheesh, another $35), and I half committed to going with Laz and BJ, but haven't thought about getting a ticket really. AND Aphrodite is playing next weekend! ($32), I know Laeli and Misha will be going, and there really hasn't been much Jump-Up around....

Although... I know I'm going to end up spending more on beer than I should this evening...

Whoa man! Spin Out! Think I really really really have done all I can on the report now. Have totally cleaned up the references and found all the missing ones, AND gotten all the figures and cross-referencing straight!

    Thursday, October 10, 2002

The poor Formatting Lady has actually been having a root canal!!! She's back though - and joking about not knowing which is worse, the root canal or The Report :-)

She doesn't seem to be able to zip it enough to email it to me though, and for some reason she doesn't actually have any space on the network! Don't know how that works! blargh - and I was hoping to have it all done before lunchtime :-(

    nb. To :1+0

OK, am giving the getting up early thing a go - gradually. Might even try for sunrisish, ultimately!

Hm - nothing new here, but reasonable summary.

Interesting - new study on eczema indicates dysfunctional immune system causes (non-production of antibacterial peptides in the skin) - wonder if this helps ID links in The Triad (with asthma and hayfever). And I wonder what the latest on the "hygiene hypothesis" is?

    Life on Venus?! Cool.

want chocolate. but just out of boredom rather than from any real craving i think. hm - could go pay those overdue bills too.

    to :1+2

Work-related - the dodgy results the Funding Body Researcher came in with appear to be related to the version of the executable we gave him, rather than some fundamental flaw in our code, which is still bad but kind of a relief ("as we had a big math test coming up next week...").

Well the ad for "Mystery of the Jurassic" was totally misleading, there was the tiniest mention (about 10 mins in) that it was a mystery how/why dino's got so big, the rest of the program was on why dino's took over during the Jurassic. This is a pretty interesting question too, but they only made one good point, and then dragged it out for the rest of the show. Essentially, the Jurassic was when Pangaea split up (mentioned about 15 mins in), and the speciation explosion, etc. all followed on from that. Perhaps I'm just easily annoyed at the moment (see previous entry on _Letters to Alice_), but some of their so-called "evidence" (esp. fossil evidence for vicariance) was rather dodgy - am putting the blame on how the tv producers presented it (namely, the comparison of individual fossil specimens) as unarguable proof, rather than the scientists, who I'm sure were more circumspect in their allegations.

Have been watching way too much tv lately. And tonight is "Mystery of the Jurassic"! Which has been advertised as exploring why the dino's got so big during that period (brain clunks: increased mutation rates/speciation? minutely more O2? an elevated energy-cascade? runaway competitive evolution? how could they possibly explain why we don't have megafauna now?). My only plausible thought is it must be a combo of right phylum/physiology at right time... ie. coincidence. Although that's not really a very satisfying hypothesis - I suppose the way they presented it in the ad implied that there was just one elusive answer - anyway, should be interesting...

    -sigh-
Formatter-Lady still hasn't gotten back to me on when she might need me to check everything (mainly that the cross-references to all the figures are right). Kind of want to close this thing off now. We were hoping to send it off to the printers like last Friday (or Monday at least). Not sure how much I should chase her up, it's not like The Report is my responsibility or anything. Just tried to give her a ring, she's not there...

Should go try FitBox again. Can't really be bothered. Had good workout yesterday.

Aroma-de-toast is coming from the office ventilation again. Did someone say Legionella spores smelled like toast?

Was supposed to go to bed early last night, so in case the renovators-across-the-road (RATRs) started at unreasonable hour (as they did yesterday) - I wouldn't be sleep deprived. But instead I stayed up to check out Buffy (who was really annoying by being all weak and nonslayerish and kept doing stupid stuff even after she realized) and bumped into the first episode of Six Feet Under (thankness for my compulsive-channel-changing), which has been a hit in the US, which totally put me off it, but I actually quite enjoyed. However, even though I was enjoying SFU (those [non]funer[e]al ads were a laff: "shake-shake-shake! shake-shake-shake! shake your booty!" - was it really advertising a shaker for your ashes? or did i totally get the wrong idea? [Ed g-j: it was for antiseptically/neatly/dignifiedly shaking dirt into the grave at actual the funeral]), I kept having to turn back to annoyingBtVS - wonder if my attention span is a problem? I know The Housemate thinks my compulsive-channel-changing is a problem.

    nice discussion of libertarianism here...

Last night I started _Letters to Alice_ by Fay Weldon, on the recommendation of stlkrgrl, to read before the rest of Austen's ouvre. So far I've only read the first couple of letters to her fictional niece regarding the HUGE! IMMENSE! WONDROUS! VALUE! OF! LITERATURE! and I'm finding it rather annoying. I think she doth protest too much. She also has a rather patronising tone, and of course I'm trying to assume it's in some "character" rather than the author's actual voice, but it's still annoying. Think I have low tolerance for annoying characters in lit. I'm reading them for fun after all. Should probably be more specific and analytical about "annoying"ness, but can't be bothered with much detail right now. It includes irrationality::illogic, plus lack of empathy for other characters. It also probably depends a lot on my mood in real life at the time. How unobjective. This is of course, a very initial impression and no reflection on stlkrgrls recommendations, which have thus far been of a very high quality.

Anyway, I suspect I've overloaded on character-driven novels at the moment, and probably need to take a break with some cool-new-cutting-edge-sciencey-wowness type book. Egan needs to come up with a new anthology of shorts.

Blargh. He messed up my captions AGAIN! I think he restricted himself to just two sections though - glad it's in all those separate subdocuments.

    Fingers-crossed-touch-wood-circle-widdershins-any-other-ritual-good-luck-stuff-that-it's-almost-almost-almost-done...

Heh, have realized the "specialist" type we have working on The Report to ensure formatting, etc. is professional, probably knows less than me about formatting and handling large documents, etc. Although that may just be in evil-Word, and she could be an expert in some esoteric professional formatting software, so I shouldn't feel smug about it. My, everything is evil today. My coffee mug is actually looking a rather evil shade of eggshell. My dolphin has a rather evil glint in it's eye. blahblahblah. Feck I can ramble...

D'oh - just realized the instant coffee i denied myself this morning may not, in fact, be evil-Nescafe, but instead coffee-of-unknown-evilness-International-Roast. I should do some research and quantify it's evilness, but I'll probably just drink water.

    Sunday, October 06, 2002

...and to complete my weekend fall into immoral hedonistic drug-taking, I'm now craving a hit of instant. it makes me feel a little soiled and dirty. and the instant provided at work is Nescafé, no less - oh god, no, I can't do it, too much unethical multinat history - although I did email Nestlé a while ago to try and get them to source part of their arabica crop "fairly"... hm - saved from caffeine by my guilty conscience...

i wonder why i fight so much harder against my caffeine cravings than i do for alcohol, etc.

Friday was so almost summery, I started thinking about going to the beach on the weekend and relaxing there with a good book. Unfortunately, there was a weird last blast of blustery winter, and instead I stayed home with a good book (or two). 1. a book of shorts by Jane Yolen (title escapes me, am very bad at focusing on titles), and 2. _American Gods_ by Neil Gaiman, who totally stole that idea from me! Damn Him! I would've gotten around to writing it one day, although a much crappier and totally different (not American) version.

Somewhat related: Have been quite liking the display shelf of "new books" at my dealer lately, I wonder if someone new is in charge of purchasing or something?

Also. Saturday night. Went to a New Moon Rock party. Had much fun. Listened to band. Fell off wagon into some Toohey's Extra Dry (it was on special, and used to be one of Fleur's favourites...). Graffiti'd table with pen AND scissors. Hope I didn't warp scissors. Although used them later, seemed fine. Met a couple of new people. Had some good kitchen talks. Played amiga - um, atari? never played either, all the same.

Sunday. Started _Mansfield Park_ (thanks to stlkrgrl).

just caught The Hugest white tail spider (Lampona cylindrata) on the wall above my bed this morning. It was like an inch long!

-ah- [relaxed sigh]... took the whole weekend off - and this seems to have worked out ok and not turned into a disaster - I didn't get any urgent emails until this morning :)

    -sigh-
i *guess* all the formatting is done for now.
undoubtedly someone will see something which will need to be changed, probably in a major major way, which will necessitate changing all the formatting i just did. but it's out of my hands for the moment.

heh. argh. there has been use of placeholder captions for some of the figures in this report. many of them are Fig. X. is getting a bit confusing.

    darn - forgot gym socks.

need to start getting to bed earlier.

Now where did this headache come from?
How can I be dehydrated? I've been drinking and drinking and drinking.
I really think I'm not absorbing moisture as well as I used to.

nb. re: paper proof, The Guru:Foe got *her* proofs from the same conference like months and months ago! I'm wondering what the deal is with that. I could assume there's just some linear time-consuming process whereby my paper happened to be later in some list than hers - but no, *I* choose to believe there's a conspiracy at work! First she gets her interview before me, and now THIS!

    hm. is it *still* Thursday?

Had cake for dinner. Someone had given it to The Father. It was very disappointing - it looked all chocolatey, but turned out to be half cream-mousse and half sponge - bleagh. Why in the world do they still make sponge cake? And that cream business - does anyone anywhere actually like that stuff? ew. At least it had a chocolate disk thingo on top.

Also, on Wed, got sent the proofs for a tiny little paper from a year and a half ago, did the corrections and sent it back just then!
    *beam*
So proud - although i really should've been working on The Report...
    *grimace*
However, since the publishers wanted the proof corrections back by tomorrow (!) it really had to be done...

ok. really over this now. shall i have cake for dinner?

-sheesh- Finally got those captions straight. He'd replaced SOME of the proper captions with just text he'd typed next to some of the plots!

Hm. Jumping all over the place a bit, aren't I?

    Losing... focus...

It may be time to go home.

ooh-er! Google-search for "planeterry" actually comes up with here second! It's out of two possibilities though. Wonder why the San Diego Performing Arts League gets priority?

The Housemate is very stressed writing up her Honours thesis, poor girl - I should probably be more supportive, cooking dinner for her and stuff - it happens occasionally, but not regularly enough for her to count on :( Have managed to provide some chocolate however.

dammit - why do they change size like that?

Never fear - back safely with sweet blessed agua...

blagh. need some water. get very dehydrated sitting staring at monitor. think most of it evaporates out through my eyeballs. they get very dry. but i'm trapped in my office by my fears - namely I just heard a door close somewhere and fear it means Corner Office Professor ("COP" to his students) may be wandering out there somewhere...

    Try this search engine: Cthuugle.

For more amusement, have a look at the bloglike "Things my girlfriend and I argue about".

    blargh. bloody figures :P
what's wrong with that one?!! suppose I should redo it anyway.

other news - did Workshop this morning on job interview techniques'n'stuff. Got into work in what would've been enough time to get to the Workshop on time if I'd known it was on, but I'd thought it was on later. Had a reminder email when I got in, but no time or place in it, and it was only a little later when I realized no one was replying to emails and colleagues also going to workshop weren't in their office, I decided it might possibly be on at that very moment. Of course since I hadn't booked it myself, so I didn't have any emails with detail or anything, and I'd *also* helpfully deleted all the original advertising for it, so i eventually decided i better go down to the Careers Desk and ask if they knew anything about it (wasn't even sure if it was through them, thought maybe it could've been through the PostGrad Students Assoc or something), fortunately, the second person I asked seemed to know how to find out, and told me, "yeah, it's on now" and directed me to the right room. Only 20 mins late all up, and fortunately there were only a few people there, and half of them were friends, so I wasn't too embarassed (made joke on entry that "i was just showing them what not to do in a job interview").

Was ok all up, but don't think I really learnt anything. Made me feel a bit tired thinking about preparing for interviews though. Can't be bothered. Seems like studying or something.

argh - don't you hate it when people edit your stuff and totally change the meaning of something you were trying to say? they may be making a totally legit point, but it's just not *it*, or when they change something so that it doesn't quite make sense, or is ambiguous and you have to decide "did they mean this? or this?"

ALSO bluddy stupid #^%*$ Word messing up my nice sensible captions and cross-references, especially when you have "tracking changes" on. Sheesh. And it looks like the person who edited some of this stuff managed some extra shenanigans to mess up these captions - how does it manage to have Fig. 1, Fig. 1, Fig. 32, Fig. 2, Fig. 53, Fig. 64...?

Not looking forward to the formatting required when we collate the billions of (well, 12 or something) separate documents into one...
